Obituary
Allan Hull and Allen Harris-1901
Amidst Life is Death
We had in type an account of the drowning of Allan R. Harris, aged 17, and Allan N. Hull, aged 16, last week and unintentionally left the type standing on the galley and went to press without it.
The boys were sons of Mr. and Mrs. Harris of the G. N. office here, and Mr. Mrs. J. J. Hull of this city, respectively, and were bathing in Stewart Lake, Wednesday afternoon, when Allan N. stepped off of a sand bar into eight or ten feet of water. Allan R. started to his friend’s assistance and almost immediately sank in four or five feet of water, from heart failure or fright, at the sight of friend’s great danger.
Allan R. could swim while Allan N could not. Mrs. Harris stood on the shore of the lake and was a witness to the drowning, but unable to render assistance.
The remains of the boys were brought home Thursday and double funeral was held in the Congregational church, Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mr. Barnes assisted by Rev. Dr. Robertson and Rev. Helmuth. Mr. Barnes delivered a very able funeral sermon endeavoring to show that there were mind, heart, and love in the world and throughout all christendom, even to the further most conception of the constellation of the stars and planets beyond the reach of the most powerful horoscope of man’s invention, all directed by a merciful God to the good of all his creatures; tending upon the whole, totally grief with promise of better life beyond this sphere of tears and sorrow.
Two platform wagons were beautifully decorated by the ladies of the Congregational church, which were used instead of the hearse for the conveyance of the remains respectively. The deceased boys were fast friends and were in every respect buried alike. Mr. and Mrs. Hull have two sons left and Mr. and Mrs. Harris have a daughter left.
These were excellent young men, very popular among their companions and dutiful and kind at home. Were members of the Congregational church.
