George Hedner Drops Dead at Home In City

Fishing Companion Died in Boat Just Week Before

Found dead at his home Tuesday after a severe heart attack was George Hedner, Well known local citizen who retired from active wok this spring. Less than a week before Mr. Hedner had been fishing with Jos. G. Sittarich when the latter died of a heart attack in the boat.

The Hedner family had been enjoying a visit from their daughter, Mrs. Arthur Halvorson and son, Roland, who was on furlough. The visitors were ready to leave and Mr. Hedner failed to appear to bid them farewell. A search by his grandson revealed that he had died during a heart attack.

Mr. Hedner had been in poor health the past year and sold the fine home place he had built up on the south side of town. He retired from active business and moved to the Shellum house near the home place.

George Hedner was born Nov.____1879 at Atwater Minn, the son of the late Gustav and

Sophia Hedner. He attended school at Atwater and married Amelia ________ in 1904. They farmed a few years and then went into the grocery business at Cosmos Minn., later buying a store at Grover City Minn. In 1914 the family moved to a farm north of Barney where they lived until 1920 when they came to Wahpeton.

Mr. Hedner purchased forty acres of land adjourning the city on the south and built up a fine place. He had a dairy for many years and later went into the nursery business on a small scale.

During his long residence in the city, Mr. Hedner was active in church and community affairs. He served on City Council and had served Bethel Lutheran church as trustee as well as in other church offices.

Funeral services will be held from Bethel Lutheran church Friday afternoon at two o’clock, with Rev. P. A. Gisvold officiating. Arrangements are in charge of Schmitt & Olson and the body will lie in state at the chapel.

Mr. Hedner is survived by his wife and six children: Mrs. Arthur Halvorson (Ethel) of Detroit, Mich.; Irving, Bismarck; Miss Frances, Brainerd, Minn.; Gordon Kensington, Minn.; Mrs. Alford Shellum (Harriet), Oshkosh, Wis., and Vernon of Twin Falls Idaho.

There are four sisters, the Misses Lyda, Hilma, Hattie and Ann Hedner of Minneapolis. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
