Prominent Richland Pioneer is Dead
Former County Commissioner Dies Thursday Evening After Brief Illness At Home
For more than half a century, a citizen of Richland County John Holthusen who was buried has been identified with the growth of this community. Serving for twelve years as county commissioner and in other civic capacities. Mr. Holthusen has made a wide acquaintance over the county. He died Thursday.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the home for John Holthusen, for more than half century a prominent resident of Richland County Burial was in the Holthusen family lot at Fairview. Rev. R. J. Beker, pastor of the Lutheran church which Mr. Holthusen had been connected with all his life and for the past 24 years a member of the Immanuel Congregation in Wahpeton, officiated.
John Holthusen was born July 12, 1858 at Dudenbuettel, Hanover, Germany. At this place, he was baptized and afterwards confirmed. When a lad 17 years old, he emigrated to this country and made home at Lake City, Minn. He farmed in Summit township until 24 years ago.
In 1879, John Holthusen came to Richland county. It has been his pleasure in the later years of his life, to recall incidents and conditions in the county when he came here. In 1880, he entered the estate of Holy Matrimony with Miss Katie Meyer.
To his union, five children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Left a widower by the death of his wife in 1892, he married Miss Anna Buck in 1893. To this union seven children were born, four of whom survive their father.
Sons and daughters left to mourn this sturdy old pioneer father, together with the widow are John D.; Tyler, Henry F.; Wahpeton; Mrs. William Tribke, Tyler; Mes. Henry D. Hauschild, Tyler; George W., Walter B., Laura and Leona, all of Wahpeton. He is survived by 14 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Maggie Buck of Bel Lake, Sask., Canada.
John Holthusen died Thursday, August 27, at the age of 73 yes, month and 15 days. For the past 24 years, he had been a familiar figure in Wahpeton. Previous to that time, he was a prominent farmer in Summit township.
For twelve years, during the time he was on the farm. John Holthusen was county commissioner from that district. He also served at various times as a member of the county drainage board and as Summit township treasurer. He always took an active part in county and township matters.
Pallbearers were Irwin and Clarence Holthusen, Harry Koppelman, Albert Steffens, Wallace Hauschild, and Alvin Buck. Honorary pallbearers were John Wiebusch, John Burfiend, Herman Helwege, Gus Raguse, Paul Meyer and John Zentgraf. Intimate friends and relatives were in attendance at the funeral at the home and buriel was in the family lot at Fairview cemetery.
