Obituary
J. D. Holthusen, Well Known Farmer, Dies
John D. Holthusen, 72, prominent Richland county farmer and 14 years as a state legislator, died at his home in Wahpeton Sunday morning. He had been in ill health for several years.
Born Feb. 19, 1881, in Summit township, the son of John and Katherine Holthusen, he had lived his entire life in this county. He attended grade school in Summit township and graduate from Wahpeton High School.
He married Anna Tribke at St. John’s Lutheran church at Tyler in 1906 and the couple farmed near there until 1942 when he retired and moved to Wahpeton. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church here, and a former member of the Summit township board and director of the Farmers Elevator Co, at Great Bend. Active in politics for many years he served as a North Dakota legislator representing the 12 districts for 14 years in the late 20’s and 30’s. He was affiliated with the Democratic party.
He is survived by his wife of Wahpeton; three sons, Ervin of Tyler, Clarence, Wahpeton and Harry of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Spencer (Florence) Church of San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. C. T. (Evelyn) Litten of Philadelphia, Penn.; three brothers, Henry, George and Walter, all of Wahpeton; four sisters, Mrs. John Jung of Tyler and Mrs. William Tribke, Mrs. H. C. Hauschild, all of Wahpeton; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Immanuel Lutheran Church here with Rev. Henry Fry officiating. Prayer service at the Vertin Chapel here at 1:30 will precede the church rites. Interment will be made in Fairview Cemetery. Vertin Funeral Home of Wahpeton is handling the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Earl and Floyd Hauschild, Art Daman, C. W. Miller and Harry and Theodore Koppelman.
