Obituary

J. J. HULL DIED SUDDENLY OF HEART FAILURE FRIDAY PROMINENT CITIZEN SUCCUMBS WITHOUT WARING WHILE IN GOOD HEALTH WAS PAST GRAND MASTER OF MASONS OF NO. DAKOTA Resident of Dakota Since Territorial Days, Lived in Wahpeton Thirty Years, Served as Alderman About 8 o’clock this morning (Friday) the community was terribly shocked by the announcement of the sudden death of John J. Hull, one of its well known citizens and a resident of the community for thirty years. Death occurred very suddenly, presumably from heart failure, and his home on Eighth street north. So far as anyone knew he had been enjoying robust health.

John J. Hull was nearly seventy years of age. He was born April 22, 1854, at Erie, Pennsylvania. That same year his parents heeded the call of the west, and cast their lot with the young state of Wisconsin. Here he spent his boyhood on the farm. His education was obtained in the public schools and at Lawrence University of Appleton, Wisconsin. At twenty-one he had acquired the trade of carpenter and joiner, and for the next twelve years he was engaged as contractor and builder.

In 1884, at the age of thirty, Mr. Hull came to Dakota Territory, going first to Fargo and then to Mapleton, where he acted as manager of the White Lumber Co. yards. From Mapleton he moved to Wahpeton in 1893, coming here as manager of the Wahpeton yards of the same lumber company, which position he held until that company sold its holdings in Wahpeton to the Thompson Yards, Inc., some few years ago. Since that time he has devoted a goodly portion of his time to the management of a sand and gravel company of which he was principal owner.

In 1882 he married Miss Mary Nichol. Five children were born to them, two of whom survive – Harold J. Hull, now a prominent attorney at Wallace, Idaho, and Bert J. Hull, who holds a responsible position with the Travelers Insurance Co. and was located at Omaha, Neb., until a few months ago when he moved to California. Mr. and Mrs. Hull spent part of the past year visiting at Wallace and Omaha with their sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

While living in Mapleton Mr. Hull served on the village council and as treasurer of Durbin township. In Wahpeton he was for six years a member of the city council. Here also he served as a trustee of the First

Congregational church for a number of years, and as superintendent of the Sunday school. During the later years he had been an active member and faithful worker in the Christian Science society of Wahpeton.

Mr. Hull was a Past Grand Master of Masons of North Dakota, being elected to that office at the Grand Lodge session of 1910 and serving until June, 1911. He was made a Mason in Casselton lodge No. 3, and upon moving to Wahpeton he transferred his membership to Wahpeton Lodge No. 15, and served in that office faithfully for six years. In 1902 he was appointed to one of the minor Grand Lodge offices, and passed through all the Grand Lodge offices in succession to that of Grand Master. Since his retirement from office he has constantly maintained his interest in things Masonic, being constantly active in local and Grand Lodge activities.
