Obituary

Nellie Hutchinson-1899

Mrs. Nellie Hutchinson, wife of John F. Hutchinson, died at her home in Abercrombie, at 9:13 o’clock on Sunday morning, January 29. 1899.

Nellie Anderson was born in Norway, April 19, 1848, and came to this country in 1852, and for seventeen years resided at Red Wing, Minn, where on November 7, 1868, she was united in marriage with John F. Hutchinson.

Nineteen years age they came to Dakota, and for fifteen years of her residence here she rendered acceptable service as postmistress in charge of the post office at Abercrombie.

In her father’s family she had two brothers and two sisters. One brother is living in Wyoming, the other three are living in this state. She was the mother of seven children, and of these four sons and one daughter, with their father, survive as mourners of an irreparable loss. These six were all present at the time of her decease.

She had a sympathetic, Christian heart, and was an earnest, benevolent worker, always read to assist where her help was needed. She was thorough as a Bible student, and on doctrinal questions was more than equal of many professed theologians.

Funeral services were held in Abercrombie at 2 o’clock on Tuesday. The church was filled to overflowing, while Rev. S. B. Loveless preached from Matthew 24:44. “Therefore be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.” Rev. Wm. Edwards was also present and participated in the services. The remains, accompanied by friends and neighbors, were brought to this city Wednesday morning on the Milwaukee train for interment. They were met at the depot by Summer Post and the Relief Corps, of which Mrs. Hutchinson was an esteemed member. These orders came with a hearse and other conveyance, and carried all to the cemetery where their respective burial rites were observed.

After this the relatives and friends from Abercrombie were conducted to the local hall of the Post and were served with dinner. Much sympathy is felt by the general public for the afflicted family.

Quite late Tuesday evening it was ascertained that Alex Hay and wife, living eight miles south of Wahpeton, had not been notified of the death of Mrs. Hutchinson. The friendly relations existing between the two families was well known, and was thought that they would feel much disappointment if they were not notified. So Ed Pond volunteered to take the 9:30 Milwaukee train , and go to Tyler, and walk from there to Mr. Hay’s. He arrived there at a little past ten, so they were enabled to be at the depot Wednesday morning when the train arrived with Mrs. Hutchinson’s remains.
