Obituary
Final Rites Are Held For Former City Businessman
Walter B. Holthusen, 71, of Wahpeton, died Friday in St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo. Funeral services were held Monday (today) in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton with the Rev. Edward J. Rutter officiating. Mrs. William Enochson was the organist and vocalists were the ladies' choir. Interment will be in the Garden of Christus, Fairview Memorial Gardens, in the spring. Presentation of the flag was by Miller-Hafner-Ross American Legion Post No. 20 of Wahpeton. Vertin's-Wahpeton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Honorary pallbearers were R. W. Schroeder, Ray Hintgen, J. M. Hanson, B. P. McCusker, M. C. Ekanger, Mel Sherva, William Matheson, Leslie Brand and Robert Caspers.
Active pallbearers were Oscar Krause, Arnold Pankow, Arlie Steen, Norman Shoberg, Ed Scott and Pat Goggin.
Mr. Holthusen was born in Summit Township, Tyler, N. D., the son of John and Anna (Buck) Holthusen. When a child, he moved to Wahpeton with his parents. He graduated from Wahpeton High School and the North Dakota State School of Science. In 1919, and his brother, Henry, founded the business known as Holthusen Seeds and Feeds. Their brother, George, joined them in 1922 and George Holthusen later purchased Henry Holthusen's interest.
Mr. Holthusen served in the United States Army in World War II. He married Constance Enrooth at St. Louis Park, Minn., July 14, 1950. He was named Wahpeton Citizen of the Year in 1965. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served in several church offices, was also a member of the Miller-Hafner-Ross American Legion Post No. 20, 40 et 8, Kiwanis and the SSS 300 Club. He had served as president of the North Dakota Seed Trade Association and was the first vice president of the Southeastern North Dakota Grain Holding Inspection Point Association and had served as director of the Richland County Historical Society. He retired in 1966.
He is survived by his wife; three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Lillie) Hauschild, Mrs. John (Laura) Jung and Mrs. Michael (Leona) Fogarty, all of Wahpeton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John, Henry and George Holthusen, and one sister, Mrs. William (Lydia) Tribke.
