Obituary

George Holthusen, 69, Wahpeton, Dies Tuesday

George W. Holthusen, 69, prominent Wahpeton businessman, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Francis Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. from Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Edward J. Rutter officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens. Visitation at Vertin’s Wahpeton will be Thursday afternoon and evening and Friday morning until noon and at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday night at Vertin’s Wahpeton Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Holthusen was born Dec. 22, 1895, to parents. John and Anna Holthusen. They came to Wahpeton in 1906. He graduated from the State School of Science and later worked in a bank at Billings, Mont. On June charged June, 1919. He returned to Billings after the service and later moved to Wahpeton in 1922 In that year he bought out his brother Henry’s interest in the business and he and his brother, Walter, continued in Holthusen Bros. Seed and Feed.

He married Harriet Glasgow, July 8, 1925, at Humboldt, Neb.

He was a member of the North Dakota American Legion Band, Wahpeton American Legion and the 40 et 8. He also was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on its boards and on the state church boards.

For many years, he was president of the Wahpeton School Board. He headed the Fairview Cemetery Association for 19 years and was especially interested in the work of the Richland Count Historical Society. He was a member of the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce and Wahpeton Rotary Club.

Besides his wife, Harriet, he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Glen (Rae) Beardmore, Waukon, Iowa and Mrs. W. K. (Barbara) Peterson of Phoenix, Arizona; nine grandchildren; a brother Walter of Wahpeton; three sisters, Mrs. Henry (Lill) Hauschild, Wahpeton; Mrs. John (Laura) Jung of Wahpeton; and Mrs. Michael (Leona) Fogarty of Wahpeton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers John and Henry, one sister, Mrs. Lydia Tribke.

The American Colors will be presented by the Wahpeton American Legion.

Stanley Strege will be organist and the Immanuel Ladies Choir will sing.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Pat Goggin, Clarence Bladow, Calmer Carlson, Herman Becker and Oscar Krause. Honorary pallbearers will be Al Bader, Harry Murray, Phil Canfield, A. N. Paulsrud, Donald Lum, William J. Leary, Ted Klugman and Dr. A. W. Plachte.
