Marlys J. Haiby

Marlys Haiby passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026, in Burnsville, MN. A visitation will be held at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home on Friday, September 25, 2026, from 5 pm to 7 pm, followed by a prayer service at 7 pm. Her funeral service will take place at Inspiration Lutheran Church in Breckenridge, MN, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 10:30 AM, with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Wahpeton.
Marlys was born on June 30, 1935, to Angus and Albertha (Wolfswinkel) Stone on the family farm in Antelope Township, Mooreton, ND. The second oldest of four children, Alvina, Marlys, Norman, and Pamela. She attended grade school at Antelope Consolidated School and graduated from Wahpeton High School in 1953. Marlys attended N.D. State School of Science (now NDSCS) and then received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Moorhead Teachers College (Minnesota State University Moorhead), Moorhead, MN. She continued her education and received her Master’s in Education from the University of Minnesota.
Marlys and Loran Haiby were united in marriage on October 15, 1960, at Breckenridge Lutheran Church, where Marlys taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She also sang in the choir for over 30 years and was active on the church council, parish education committee, and later quilting. Loran passed away in August of 2013 following several health issues.
Marlys worked in radio and television for 11 years, starting while she was a senior in high school at KBMW in Wahpeton, later at KVOX in Moorhead while she attended college. She accepted a full-time position at Channel 7, KCMT-TV in Alexandria, MN (later sold to Channel 5 in Minneapolis), followed by KOTE radio (now KBRF) in Fergus Falls, MN.
After earning her teaching certificate, she taught 1st grade in Campbell, MN, and 1st, 2nd, and 4th grades, and Head Start in the summer in Breckenridge Elementary for a total of 34 years. Marlys particularly loved teaching reading, and she had the opportunity to attend the National Reading Convention in 1972 in Atlanta, Georgia, where she met numerous children’s authors. She was named Outstanding Young Educator of the Year in 1972 and the Breckenridge Cowgirls Basketball Booster of the Year for 1996-1997.
Marlys was active in Project Breckenridge for several years, she also served two terms on the Lake Region Arts Council and one term on the Breckenridge School Board.
Marlys is survived by her children, Jay (Janet) of Burnsville, MN, April (Omar) Maldonado of Kirkwood, MO; grandchildren, Andrew and Samantha Haiby, Christian, Solis and Elijah Maldonado, Adreanne (Jake) Summers, great-grandson, Jackson Summers, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials preferred to the Samaritan's Purse, American Heart Association, or the donor’s choice.
