Obituary

George Johnson, Once of Galchutt, Dies in Oregon

George Johnson 80, formerly a Galchutt businessman and well known in the area died Thursday in a Portland, Ore., hospital. He was stricken with a cerebral hemorrhage about a week before his death.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Schmitt-Poulton Funeral Home chapel here with Rev. P. A. Gisvold of Wahpeton officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Alvin Rustvang will play the organ and Syver Wateland will sing.

The pallbearers will be Lars Oie, Edward Moen, Alvin Rustvang, Alvin Carlson, Henry Bakken and H.A. Syvertsen.

Mr. Johnson was born in Norway July 7, 1879 and came with his parents to the United States in 1882. They settled near Milnor where he attended local schools and grew to manhood. He was a graduate of Concordia College.

He moved to Galchutt in 1907 and on July 1, 1906 married Ella Olson at Galchutt.

He was in the lumbering business and operated a general merchandise store at Galchutt until 1943 when he retired and moved to Portland to live with a daughter, Mrs. John (Lucylle) Schmitt. Mrs. Johnson died in 1933.

Funeral services were held at Ascension Lutheran church in Portland and the body was shipped to Wahpeton escorted by Mr. and Mrs. Schmitt and daughter, Carol.

Survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Olbrick, suburban Portland.
