Galchutt Young Man Dies Here Wed. Morning
Five Weeks Illness Ended for Earl Bernard Johnson, Former Science School Student
Funeral Services on Friday Afternoon
Interment to be in Local Cemetery Rites from Bethel Lutheran Church Here A host of community and distant friends were saddened and family members and relatives were bereaved when it was learned that Earl Bernard, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson, Galchutt, had passed away at the Wahpeton hospital Wednesday morning at four thirty following an illness that had continued for five weeks.
Earl Bernard Johnson was born June 27, 1913 at Galchutt. At the time of his death, he was 19 years, seven months and twenty five days of age. He had made his home in that village with his parents practically all of his life.
He received his elementary education in the Galchutt public schools. Later he enrolled as a student at the State School of Science, where he completed his high school education and an elementary electrical course. Earl was baptized in the Lutheran church, located a short distance north of Galchutt. He remained a member of that church until the time of his death.
Five weeks ago Earl Johnson contracted a heavy cold. He was cared for at his home for a week and the family physician called. His condition was not believed to by alarming. He was advised to enter the Wahpeton hospital for care and was admitted Sunday, January 29th.
During his illness at the hospital he remained in a critical condition from day to day. Pneumonia followed and surgical treatment was necessary to relieve his suffering. Medial skill and tender care were of no avail. Combating the disease from day to day, he showed almost superhuman strength. During his illness, he was a times irrational and then again recognized members of the family and friends. Despite the fact that he was in a critical condition during his entire illness, hopes were entertained for his recover. He was what nurses and physicians term a model patient and endeared himself to all who assisted in any way to care for him during his illness. His mother, Mrs. Johnson, was with him almost constantly. Friends and relatives assisted members of the family in caring for him. He passed away calmly and peacefully.
Earl Johnson was known among his friends as a young man of splendid character. During his life, he made fiends easily and his happy disposition was generally recognized. He had prepared himself to enter a field of electrical work but on account of lack of that type of labor, he assisted his father at home.
He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George Johnson of Galchutt, two sisters, Dorothy at home and Lucylle of Wahpeton and his grandmother, Mrs. Lina Olson, of Wahpeton.
Mr. Johnson was a private in Co. “I” 164th Infantry and will be accorded full military honors when funeral services re held. Friday afternoon from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Lina Olson, 533 North Third Street at 1:30 o’clock and from Bethel Lutheran church at two. As members of the Bethania church, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have arranged the funeral services similar to those which would have been held in their own church, with their own pastor and choir from home.
The remains will be taken to Mrs. Olson’s home Thursday afternoon, Feb. 23. Rev. V. L. Peterson, pastor of the Bethania church, will conduct the services and he will be assisted by Rev. J.C. Wisnaes, pastor of the Bethel Lutheran church in Wahpeton. Musical numbers will include numbers by the male quartet of the Bethania church consisting of Melvin Wold, Sivert Wateland, Alvin Rustvang, and Vernon Hanson. Other musical numbers have not been arranged. Interment will be made in the Fairview cemetery. Pallbearers will be young men from the Galchutt community, Urban Oscarson, Walter Klubberud, Winfred Carlson, Robert Alexander, Leonard Flaa and Herman Johnson.
Captain George Fischer has issued orders to Co “I” members to meet at the Armory hall at one o’clock Friday and from there march to the church and then to the cemetery, where the firing squad will fire the last salute. The squad of which Mr. Johnson was a member will have the prominent place in the parade.
