Daniel Roberts Jones, or Dan R. Jones, as he preferred to be called, was aa long time resident of the city and one of the leading lawyers. He was active in the Republican party and a supporter of Governor William Langer during the latter’s campaigns. He served in the 1933 and 1937 sessions of the North Dakota legislature as representative from the 13th district and was a leader in the house. He was a worker for the State School of Science and one of its foremost champions.
Born October 5, 1871, at Neenah, Wis., one of a family of nine brothers and three sisters, he worked his way through college, graduating from high school at Neenah and then from Rippon College in 1885. He was a member of varsity football team at Rippon college as well as of the baseball and track teams. He also sang in the college glee club. As a matter of fact, his intense interest in athletics never diminished up to the time of his death. He was an ardent fan of high school and college athletics here and in his younger days in Wahpeton played baseball with various amateur organizations.
Dan Jones studied law under Judge Gary and Forward at Oshkosh, Wis., in the summers of 1895 and 96, and then attended the University of Wisconsin a term, studying law. However, he went to the University of Minnesota later and graduated from the law course in 1897. He first came to North Dakota in the summer of 1893, to work for his brother, John R. Jones at Hankinson. He returned again in the summer of 1895.
He came to Wahpeton in 1897 as deputy sheriff under his brother, Evan M. Jones. He served in this capacity for some time before associating with the law office of McCumber, Forbes & Jones, the partners being the late U.S. Senator Porter J. McCumber and Senator Joseph G. Forbes of the present firm of Forbes & Forbes. He remained with the firm for a few years before going into law business for himself.
For many years he had offices in the old National Bank building, moving to his present offices in the Pierce block when the National banks present building was constructed. Victor Baumhoeffner worked as a secretary and later as a partner of Mr. Jones for more than twenty years being with him from the time Mr. Baumhoeffner was a young man of twenty until his death a few years ago. Mr. Jones partner in the law office at the time of his death was Carl J. Larson, a graduate of the University of North Dakota law school and arts course and a former Mayville, N. Dak., young man.
Mr. Jones was married June 7, 1910 at Wilkes-Barrie, Penn., to Ethel V. Koerner, who survives him. They have made their home in Wahpeton since that time. He is survived by his brothers, John R. Jones of Hankinson, Ben Jones of near Hankinson, Will Jones and Robert T. Jones of Neenah, Wisc., and a sister, Mrs. James Novak of White Rock, S. Dak. Mrs. Novak was at the Jones home at the time Mr. Jones passed away. Will Jones and his family were visitors at the Dan R. Jones home but a few days ago. John R. Jones, who has been seriously ill at his home in Hankinson for a long time, was also a visitor here several weeks ago, making the trip up here in an ambulance. Dan R. Jones was a distant kinsman of David Lloyd-George, wartime premier of England.
Dan R. Jones was a member of the Congregational church here and sang in the church choir for twenty-five years. He was a member of the Commercial Club and the Rotary Club. He was active in the Republican Party and attended a great many sessions of the state legislature as a member of the North Dakota Taxpayer’s association. He was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor at the convention at Valley City in 1935. I was as a member of the association that he worked for tax reduction in state and county expenditures and was considered an authority on tax matters.
Mr. Jones was elected to the 1933 session of the legislature and to the 1937, the latter election coming when Mr. Jones was unable to campaign because of illness. He insisted on attending, however, and went to Bismarck. Shortly after he arrived at the state capitol, he was stricken with pneumonia but survived an attack that his friends thought might proven fatal. Indominable in spirit he came home and took up his business affairs.
His illness was too great for him to overcome and he was confined to his home several months ago. For a few days, he succeeded in getting around to his farms and down to his office but soon he was forced to rest at home because of his heart. About three weeks ago he was confined to his be. A week ago his health took a turn for the worse and his life was despaired of. He passed away Sunday morning with his wife, his sister and Mr. and Mrs. Larson at his bedside.
