Obituary
Dr. David Jaehning
Dr. David Grover Jaehning, 56, Bermuda Run, Advance, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 26, at Davie County Hospital, Mocksville, N.C.
Services are to be held today (Monday), Dec. 28, at 4 p.m. at Clemmons United Methodist Church, Clemmons, N.C.
Dr. Jaehning was born at Twin Valley, Minn., to Herma and Emma (Aamoth) Jaehning. He was a graduate of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.D. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Mattie Williard Feb. 27, 1948, at Winston-Salem, N.C.
Dr. Jaehning began his medical practice in Wahpeton in 1952 after serving on active duty with the North Dakota Air National Guard during the Korean Conflict. He was an active staff member of St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge, for many years and served two terms as its chief of staff. He also served as medical director for St. Francis Home, Breckenridge, for 24 years.
His community involvement in Wahpeton included serving on the Wahpeton board of education for 16 years. He was the board's chairman for three years. He was the school physician at North Dakota State School of Science for 26 years and received a special recognition award in 1978 for 25 years of service.
Dr. Jaehning held memberships in the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. He and his family were members of the Wahpeton Methodist Church, of which he served on the board of trustees for 15 years and as its chairman for five years.
Dr. Jaehning was affiliated with the First District Medical Society of North Dakota, the North Dakota State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. He was an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and was instrumental in starting the North Dakota Chapter. He served as the state chapter's president during 1959.
In May 1979 he and his wife moved to North Carolina to establish Family Practice Clinic in Clemmons, where he served until his death.
He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Candace Denver, Colo.; two sons, Mark, Denver, and Gregg, Wahpeton; and three grandchildren.
Memorials are to be made to the Bowman G. Gray School of Medicine educational fund, 300 South Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27103.
