Obituary
Mathias Johanson
Mathias Johanson, 96, Fairmount, died Wednesday at St. Francis Home, Breckenridge. Funeral services will be tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Wayne Quebell officiating. Visitation will be this afternoon and evening (Friday) and until the time of the service tomorrow. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.
Honorary casket bearers will be Thomas and Stephen Johanson, Clifford Hatle, Elwood Grimes, Alfred Hubrig and Henry Himbaugh. Active casket bearers will be Merle Johanson, Bernard Johanson, David, Curtis and Michael Hatle and Michael Dockter.
He was born June 15, 1883 in Namsoas, Norway, the son of Johan and Margaretta (Petterson) Mathiason. The family came to Menistee, Mich. in 1903, later moving to Mayville, then to the Lisbon-Gwinner area. He married Albertina Nelson April 17, 1912 in Lisbon. They farmed in the Lisbon area until 1942. They moved to the Wahpeton area where he farmed and later worked as a carpenter. He retired about 11 years ago at age 85. In 1964, they moved to Fairmount. His wife died Aug. 18, 1969. He continued to live in Fairmount until last April when he moved into the Wahpeton Retirement Center.
He is survived by four sons, Neal, Fairmount; Chester, Hankinson; Leonard, Wahpeton; and Mervin, Monterey, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Mabel Moore, Cogswell, N.D.; Mrs. Margaret Hatle, Wahpeton; and Mrs. Merle (Myrtle) Hatle, Adams, Minn.; 23 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, two sisters and two brothers.
