Obituary

Al Johnson Killed in Car Accident Tuesday

Al A. Johnson, a 65-year-old retired Wahpeton businessman and avid sportsman, died of injuries suffered in a one-car accident Tuesday night on state Highway 13 near Wyndmere.

The former Ben Franklin store owner was rushed to St. Francis Hospital but died shortly after having been admitted. Highway patrol officers said Johnson apparently lost control of his car about 8 p.m. as he was traveling east towards Wahpeton. He was alone.

Although the highway at the accident scene was dry, officials noted there were scattered icy patches near the scene, about four miles east of Wyndmere, that might have caused the mishap.

Funeral services will be held Saturday in the Bethel Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. P.A. Gisvold officiating. Interment will be in Christus Gardens of Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation at Vertin’s-Wahpeton will be Friday afternoon and evening.

Algot Johnson was born May 21, 1900 at Herman, Minn., the son of August and Alma Johnson. His parents died when he was 8 and he lived with his uncle until age 12, when he started work on the Soo Line Section Crew near Mantador. He became a foreman on a section crew at Claire City, S D., at age 17.

In 1919, he came to Cyrus, Minn., where he barbered. He was married to Olga Hanse at Cyrus, Minn., Sept. 20, 1920 and in 1923, they moved to St. Paul. Later they returned to Cyrus and came to Wahpeton in 1935. He entered the variety store business here with Bert Sagness of Breckenridge, and purchased the business in 1950. Later he was joined by his son, James, who purchased the business in 1960. He was still active in the business.

During the summers, they lived at Otter Tail Lake.

Surviving are his wife; a son James of Wahpeton; three grandchildren, Mark, Craig and Meredith; and four brothers, Iver of Fergus Falls, Elmer of Benson, Minn., Jerome of Cyrus, Minn., and Clifford of St. Paul.

Besides being an enthusiastic sportsman, he was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, the Wahpeton Eagles, Wahpeton Elks, Masonic Lodge A. F. and A. M. here, a past Kiwanis member and an active member of the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce when he was in business. He also was a trustee at Bethel Church, when the new building was built.
