Obituary
Esther G. Johnson, 82, Wahpeton, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 1986, at Wahpeton Health Care Center. Funeral will be Saturday (today) at Bethel Lutheran Church with Rev. M.L. Hartmann officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be at the church prior to the service.
Esther G. Gunvaldson was born April 23, 1903, at Carpio, N.D., to John and Julia (Moen) Gunvaldson. She moved with her family to Mayville, N.D., as a child. She graduated from high school there and from Mayville State College. She taught in South Dakota and Wyoming and later in Mantador and Summit Township rural Wahpeton. She married Melvin Johnson Nov. 30, 1929, at Mayville. They moved to Mooreton where they farmed in Mooreton Township. They retired in 1958 and moved to Wahpeton. Her husband died Dec. 19, 1967. She continued to live in Wahpeton.
While at Mooreton she was a member of Mooreton Lutheran Church, served as president of the Ladies Aid, was church secretary, Sunday School superintendent, member of the choir and had been a church organist. At Wahpeton she was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and American Lutheran Church Women.
Surviving are three sons and a daughter, Gordon Johnson, Mooreton; Richard Johnson, Union, Wash.; Clifford Johnson, Route 2, Wahpeton; and Mrs. Gene (Joyce) DeVries, Wahpeton; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter.
Honorary and active casketbearers will be grandsons. Honorary casket bearers are Kevin DeVries, Tom, Daniel, David and Steve Johnson, and Scott Wolford. Active casket bearers are Ken and Chris Johnson, Louis Weber, Jim Novotny, Tim Millar, and Kyle DeVries.
