Obituary
E. L. Kaatz Stricken With Heart Attack
Ernest L. Kaatz, resident of Wahpeton since World War I, died Thursday morning at four o’clock after being stricken with a heart attack. He had been ill a week ago but had recovered and returned to work, had enjoyed television the evening before and retired only to awaken about 3:30 complaining of a numb arm. He died before the doctor could come from next door.
No funeral arrangements are being made until his children arrive. Rites will be conducted from the First Congregational church.
Ernest Kaatz was born at Wood Lake, Minn., Jan 8, 1894, and attended school thee. He served in the post engineers during World War I, having 18 months overseas service.
After returning from the war he came to Wahpeton and in 1929 married Lottie Evans. To them were born two children, who with the mother survive. They are James, who is located in Chicago and Miss Virginia, a student at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. Both are enroute home at this time.
An active Mason, Mr. Kaatz was Past Master of the local lodge, past high priest of the Wahpeton Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and past eminent commander of Wahpeton commandery. He was past commander of the local post of American Legion and had served the local 40 et 8 as chef de gare.
He had worked as a barber in Wahpeton for many years, being with the Canham shop for nine years, with the Berg shop for many years and for the past ten years had worked for L. L. Stephens at his shop in Breckenridge. He was in civil service two years during World War II, being employed on the west coast with the post engineers.
He leaves his mother, Mrs. Wm. Kaatz, of Spokane; two sisters, Mrs. Maurice Frieburg, of Minneapolis and Miss Hilda Kaatz of Spokane; one brother, Walter Kaatz, also resides at Spokane.
