Mrs. John Keen Dies Tuesday in Minneapolis

Funeral Services For Former Wahpeton Woman Will be Held Here Friday Afternoon.

Funeral services for Mrs. John J. Keen, of Grafton, who died on Tuesday morning in Minneapolis, will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the Vertin funeral parlor with Rev Hartman officiating. Mrs. Keen who was a sister of Mrs. Jos. G. Forbes, and a former resident of this city died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Florence Julia Watson was born, August 17 1877, the fifth of nine children of the J. P. Watson family in Marshall, Minn. She early received musical training and grade and high school education then spent a year in St Paul, Minn., with her sister Grace Watson, a musical composer, who attended Macalester College. She then came to Wahpeton where she lived with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Don Davidson, and worked as one of the assistants in the post office for two years, proving very efficient.

August 2, 1900, she was married to John Julius Keen, a Wahpeton druggist who was about to Locate in Minto. After several years there she and her husband returned to Wahpeton to open a new drug store. At this time, they adopted a little girl Dorothy an invalid who lived to be 21 years of age.

Until Dorothy’s death Mrs. Keen had been very active in social choir and lodge circles. Her rich alto voice was an addition to the choir and her sociable disposition made her popular as a hostess or guest.

Eight years ago, she and her husband moved to Graton, and since residing there Mrs. Keen had suffered four strokes. A month ago when she was in Minneapolis for special treatments and apparently gaining, she suffered a severe stroke from which she never recovered. Two nurses and a doctor were in constant attendance to the last, her husband often there and her sister Mrs. Forbes visiting her twice and many friends in the cities calling.

Surviving relatives besides Mr. Keen and Mrs. Forbes are a brother, John Watson, of Great Falls, Mont., and Mrs. Maude MacLafferty, of Mena, Ark. Pallbearers will be R. T. Barber, W. A. Farnsworth, S.H. Murray, E. F. Riley, V. C. Ramstad and James Powrie. Interment will be made at Fairview cemetery beside her daughter.
