Tragedy Occurs When Little Boy Is Returning from Rural School

Dale Keim, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Keim, Center township, was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon shortly after four o’clock when he was struck by a car owned and driven by Don Bishop of Wyndmere. Funeral services for the little boy are to be conducted on Friday afternoon from the Methodist church. Rev. Wilson Johnstone will officiate.

A coroner’s inquest was conducted Wednesday afternoon at Schmitt & Olson chapel with Donald Lum, J. Meyer Johnson and J.H. Dietz as member of the coroner’s jury. L.E. Lester, county coroner presided, and Clifford Schneller conducted the questioning of the witnesses. It developed at the hearing that Mrs. Anton Griepentrog a friend of the Keim family, picked up the little boy, together with four of her children about four that afternoon. She had been doing this from time to time. The boy attended the Center township school about four miles west of Wahpeton on highway 13. In the car was Dale Keim, six of the Griepentrog children and Mrs. Griepentrog. At the corner where a township road leads by the Keim place Mrs Griepentrog stopped. This is approximately two miles west of Wahpeton.

She was unable to take the boy to the house because of the extremely muddy roads. As the boy left Mrs. Griepentrog said the little fellow thanked her and said that his father had told him to wait at the Otto Witt home and that Mr. Keim had said he did not think Mrs. Griepentrog could drive on the township road.

Dale walked or ran west along the southside of the Griepentrog car which was headed east. He then started across the road to the entrance of the Otto Witt home. Mr. and Mrs. Don Bishop together with Mrs. Bishop’s brother and his

wife, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Danner, were traveling west on the highway to their homes in Wyndmere.

They testified that they were traveling somewhere around 35 or 40 miles an hour. Mr. Bishop said he did not see the little boy until he was in front of the car and the car was passing the Griepentrog car which had just started up. Bishop swerved to avoid hitting the boy but struck him with the front right fender of his car.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Witt were attracted by the commotion and came from their home. Mr. Witt took the boy from Mrs. Griepentrog and Mr. Danner and took him into the house where Mrs. Witt administered first aid. They said the little fellow was still alive. Mr. Bishop turned his car around and rushed back to Wahpeton for a doctor and an ambulance. He also called the sheriff’s office and brought back deputy sheriff Martin Hatlie. Dr. A. M. Thompson came later but pronounced the boy dead upon arrival.

Doctor Thompson said that death was due to some internal injury due to the force of the blow. Mr. Danner ran down the township road to the Rolland Keim home in an effort to find the father. Mr. Witt went to town to look or Mr. Keim.

Darlene Griepentrog was looking through the rear window of the car she was riding in and saw the body of the little boy hurled through the air and land in the ditch. It was her cry that caused her mother to rush to the aid of the stricken youngster.

None of the occupants of the Bishop car said that they saw the boy until he was in front of the car. Mr. Bishop said that he did not believe the boy ever saw the car.
Also called as a witness was State Highway Patrolman Art Anderson.
The jury brought in a verdict of accidental death.

Dale Ammin Keim was born Dec. 24, 1931. He is survived by his parents and one brother Reynold who attends school in Wahpeton.
