Mrs. Ida M. Lacy Dies Tuesday After Lingering Illness

Christian Science, OES Rites Planned For Pioneer Business Woman

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida M. Lacy, who died Tuesday morning at St. Mary hospital, will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock at the Masonic hall. Christian Science services read by Mrs. A. Torguson and Mrs. W. A. Farnsworth will be followed by Eastern Star Rites.

In a lifetime which spanned the growth of this community, Mrs. Lacy was a leader in church and social activities. She was the last charter member of Wahpeton Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, residing here.

She was a member of the Christian Science church and had served a three year term as second reader in the local society.

Since the death of her husband 28 years ago she had conducted the Lacy Jewelry store which he established in pioneer days. As a special project in the store, she kept a fancywork counter and until a few years ago did exquisite needlework as a pastime.

Ida Pfaff was born in Hutchinson, Minn., June 10, 1864. She came to Wahpeton as a girl ten years old to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. J. Bauer, her aunt and uncle. She spent her girlhood here and in 1881 was married to George A. Lacy. They established their home in the building on Dakota Avenue which still houses the jewelry business.

They had no children but in 1898, they adopted Mrs. Lacy’s niece Edna Pfaff then a child five years old, gave her heir name and cherished her with a love which left them grief-stricken when she died during a typhoid epidemic at the age of 14.

Mr. Lacy was prominent in Masonic circles prior to his death in 1914 and Mrs. Lacy was a charter member of Wahpeton Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. She served as worthy matron of Wahpeton Chapter in 1894, 1895, 1902, 1908 and 1909. She was the senior grand matron of North Dakota serving in 1898-99. To her continued interest and leadership through the years was due the growth of the Masonic affiliate group here.

Mrs. Lacy had been in failing health for a number of years. She had been cared for at home until two months ago when she was removed to St Mary hospital. Taken critically ill over the week end she died Tuesday morning.

She leaves two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Wells, of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Ricka Olson of Red Wing, Minn. Two nieces, Mrs. J. E. Zaveral, Silver Lake, Minn., and Mrs. Edith Giddings of Breckenridge, were at her bedside during her last illness. Another niece, Miss Bertha Bauer, is on her way here from Portland, Ore., and will arrive this (Thursday) evening.

Following services here the body will be shipped to Minneapolis for cremation; the ashes will be interred in Fairview cemetery, as was her husband.

Expected in Wahpeton for the services Friday are a number of Eastern Star officers, including Mrs. Violet Oleson, worthy grand matron, Mrs. Minnie Risk, grand secretary and past grand matron, Mrs. Pearl May, past grand matron, Rev. Armstrong, associate grand patron, Walter L. Stockwell, past grand patron, Ralph Miller past grand patron and Norma Sorlien, grand organist, of Fargo. Grand officers will be in charge of the Eastern Star rites.
