George A. Lacy-1914 GEO. A. LACY One of Wahpeton’s Pioneer Business Men Passes on After Several Month Illness
The death of Geo. A. Lacy, pioneer jeweler of this city occurred at his home last Saturday shortly after noon, the immediate cause of his death being heart failure. Mr. Lacy had been ill for several months and had been much worse the past few weeks altho there were days when he appeared much improved until the last both he and his friends held out great hopes of his recovery.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Masonic Hall, afternoon services being in charge of the Masonic bodies and evening services by the members of the Christian Science church. The body was taken to St. Paul Tuesday evening for cremation.
Geo. A. Lacy was born in Detroit, Michigan and was fifty-eight years old at the time of his death. He came to Fargo in 1880, first going to Fargo to take charge of a jewelry store for a brother. He came to Wahpeton in 1881 and engaged for himself in the same business and in the same location until his death. In 1884 he was married to Miss Ida M. Pfaff, who survives him. No other relatives are living.
He was a 32nd degree Mason, being a member of the Wahpeton lodge, and the Wahpeton Commander, Knights Templar. He was the first Mason to receive his degrees in Richland county.
The services in the Masonic Hall Tuesday afternoon were attended by members of the Masonic bodies and a large number of friend. Past Grand Master J. J. Hull read the Masonic service and Rev Sewrey of this city and Rev. Hutcheson of Fargo assisted. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Among those attending from out of the city were H. P. Pfaff and Chas. Pfaff of Fargo, brother and nephew of Mrs. Lacy; Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Adams, Odebolt, Iowa; J. Q. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bonney, Fergus Falls; Mrs. G. T. Propper and Mrs. Orcutt of Minneapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John T. Wells and Mr. and Mrs. Mose Giddings of Breckenridge. The body was accompanied to St. Paul by Mrs. Lacy, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Adams, Mr. and Mrs. Mose Giddings and undertaker J. W. Worner.
