Obituary
F. Lane-1914
After Several Years of Illness Prominent Richland County Man Passes Away The community was grieved to learn last Saturday of the death of H. F. Lane, which occurred at the farm home shortly before noon of that day. Mr. Lane had been a sufferer for a number of years from throat trouble and complications the result of service and exposure during the civil war. Of late years this trouble has become more serious and he was a great sufferer most of the time.
The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, first a brief service at the home and then at Fairview cemetery where interment was made and to where the remains of other members of the family, who were buried in the private burying ground on the Lane farm, are soon to be removed.
Rev. Sewrey officiated and the following acted as pallbearers: W. E. Purcell, C. D. Rittenhouse, G. J. Johnson, Math Braun, N. Klein and Chas. Glander. Dozens of automobiles carried a large number of the friends of the family out to the Lane home for the funeral services and the members of the G. A. R. Post and the Relief Corps attended on a body. A great many very beautiful and costly floral tributes were sent out by friends and the societies to which Mrs. Lanes belongs.
Hiram F. Lane was born in Cayuta, Chemung Co., N. Y., May 20th, 1849 and moved with his parents to Bellevere, Mich., when a boy. He was married to Miss Jane Bailey at Bellevere and two children, Mina, now Mrs. Armstrong, and Will E. were born to them. His wife died at the above place in 1882.
He enlisted in Co. I, 1st Infantry, April 22nd 1861 at Marshall, Mich., was wounded and taken prisoner at the battle of Bull Run, July 21st, 1861. Was in Libby prison and transferred from there to Saulisburg. Being unfit for duty because of wounds, he was discharged, July 6th, 1862. Late that same year he re-enlisted and served his country until the close of the war. He returned to Michigan for five years and then went to Montana where he was in business for a number of years. He then moved to Aberdeen, S. Dakota, where he engaged in the livery business. He came to Wahpeton in 1892. He was married to Mary. E. French who survives him, in1893. He has lived at his farm residence since, suffered from the old wounds received during the Civil War. He died Saturday, June 27th at half past eleven. His son and daughter reached here Monday evening and Mrs. Lane’s brother, Mr. Geo. Barnes, from Iowa, also arrived Monday morning.
Mr. Lane was well known thruout Richland county and his genial and kindly disposition won him many friends who will regret his loss and whose sympathy will go out to the bereaved ones.
