Mrs. W. S. Lauder, Wahpeton Pioneer, Laid to Rest

Funeral services for Mrs. W. S. Lauder, who died Thursday at St. Mary hospital at the age of 83, were conducted Sunday afternoon at First Congregational church of which she was a charter member. Dr. S. G. Shick officiated at the rites and interment was in the family lot in Fairview Cemetery, beside her husband.

At the funeral were all members of her family: Max W. Lauder, who resides here: Rae S. Lauder, of Minneapolis; Mrs. Henry (Francis) Rubinkam, Lake forest, Ill., and Mrs. Diarmuid (Rose) Russell Katonah, New York.

She also leaves two brothers, Arthur E. McKean, Isabel, S.Dak., and Charles J. McKean, Portland, Org.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Hazen, Larimore, N.D., and Mrs. Ernest Shaw, Boise, Idaho and two grandchildren.

Nettie McKean was bon Fe. 28, 1869 at Bear Valley, Minn., the eldest child of the late Charles A. McKean and the Ambler families came from New England and were of revolutionary stock. When the McKeans came to this community, Nettie was girl of 11. They came by train to Breckenridge, which was then the end of the railroad. The trip from St. Paul took one week, with a two day wait at Willmar and another at Morris. The crossing from Breckenridge to Wahpeton was made by Ferry.

Mr. McKean took a claim in the vicinity of Lightning’s Nest, near Hankinson and lived there six months, then sold the rights and came to Wahpeton with his family. He was one of the early postmasters of Wahpeton and clerk of court for several years.

Mrs. Lauder received her early education in Minnesota, then attended school in Wahpeton. At the age of 16 she started teaching and was registered in the first meeting of the North Dakota Education association in Fargo. She taught first in Antelope township, later at Sheldon and then in Wahpeton.

On Dec. 28, 1892, she was married to W. S. Lauder, local lawyer and a United States Judge of the Fourth Judicial District for 15 years. Mr. Lauder died in 1951. Mrs. Lauder was an active member of the church which she joined as a girl. She was a leader in its Ladies Aid, serving in various offices and heading the group several times. At the age of 70, noting that leadership was lacking, she took over as president of the Aid and led the group through a successful year’s work.

During her many years of church work she assisted with fund raising and other activities in connection with the building of two churches which have served the parish during the period.

Active in women’s club work, she helped found the Woman’s Literary Club in 1895 and was its first president.

A past president of the North Dakota Federation of Women’s Clubs, she attended the first convention of the state organization in Fargo in 1897. She was elected president at the next convention held in Wahpeton in 1898 and held many more club offices.

She received a gold medal at the organization’s convention in Minot in 1941 as the member having the longest continuous service in a federated club.

She was among the honored guest and received another gold medal at convention sessions of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs at Atlantic City, N.J., in 1944.

In addition to her church and club work, Mrs. Lauder maintained her interest in educational matters. She was elected an honorary membership in Delta Kappa Gamma society several years ago. She was a member of Chapter J. PEO.
