Obituary

Edward Letteer-1918

Ed. Leteer, one of the well known young men of Wahpeton, died at his home in this city last Saturday morning at 2:30. The cause of death was quick consumption, which seized him after he had recovered from a severe attack of pneumonia following the flue. Ed. was taken ill among the first of the local people who because victims of the flu. He and Paul Johnson were co-workers at the Standard Oil Co. plant in Breckenridge when the epidemic struck the town. Johnson, it will be remembered, died a number of weeks ago. Ed. was quite ill with the flu, then got pneumonia from which he had apparently recovered, but remained very weak and unable to get out of the house. The weakened condition of his lungs must have made it easy for the white plague to fasten its clutches on him. There is not much to say in the way of an obituary for Ed. Leteer. Everybody in town knew him and liked him. He was an industrious young man, sober, clean, a loyal citizen and a good fellow. At the death of his father a few years ago, he became the head of the family and had been their main support. His death has made a vacancy in the Leteer family which will never be filled.

Deceased was born at Sand Creek Mich., August 18, 1884, and was thirty-four years old at the time of his death. The family came to Fairmount when Ed. was seven years of age, and made their home on a farm near that town for twelve years. They then moved to a farm near Woodhull, where the family home was maintained thirteen years. The family then moved to Wahpeton, where they have resided for about three and a half years. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. C. J. Leteer; three brothers, Ray, Roy and Frank; three sisters, Cecile, Frances, and Mrs. Hazel Weiss; all but the last living at home.

The funeral service was held Monday at the Congregational church, at half past two o’clock, Rev. Stillwell conducting the service. Burial was in Fairview cemetery, where his father was laid to rest some seven years ago.
