Funeral Services Held Saturday For J. J. Lohr

Died Thursday A.M. After Heart Attack At Daughter’s Home

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Methodist church here for John J. Lohr, former businessman and school teacher, who died suddenly Thursday morning following a heart attack at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Claude Rowley, at Fergus Falls.

Rev. C. H. Meier officiated at the service and burial was made in Fairview cemetery. Vertin Funeral home of Wahpeton were in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were H. B. Paul, Dr. A. M. Thompson, B. J. Williams, Howard Lewis, H. H. Rustad and E. N. Pennington.

Mr. Lohr was born March 15, 1862, at Canton, Ill., the son of George and Olive Lohr. As a young lad he moved with his parents to Iowa where he grew to manhood and attended the high schools. When 18 years old he began teaching school and continued for nearly forty years.

He was married to Miss Mahn Boylan March 12, 1881, at Hubbard, Iowa. To this union were born five children: Mrs. Claude (Beaulah) Rowley of Fergus Falls; William of Willseyville, N.Y.; Mrs. H. V. (Marie) Mitchell of Lansing, Mich,; Mrs. S. C. (Gladys) Lucas; and Charles who died during World War I.

The family lived in Iowa for more than twenty years and in Kansas two years before moving to North Dakota in 1907. They settled first in Kidder county where they lived for seven year. In 1914 they came to Wahpeton where Mr. Lohr was engaged in the Singer Sewing Machine business.

Mrs. Lohr died Feb. 23, 1928 and since then Mr. Lohr had made his home with his daughter and son –in-law Dr. and Mrs. Lucas here.

Just a week before his death he went to Fergus Falls to visit in the home of his daughter there while Mr. Lucas went through the clinic at Rochester, Minn. All through his life he had known little illness until about three years ago when he was in the hospital about three months. He was a devoted member of the Foss Methodist church here and when his health permitted he never missed a service He was an active Sunday school worker all his life.

He was a man of exemplary principles, an affectionate father, a kind friend and a good neighbor. He will be greatly missed in this community.

Other survivors include two sisters; Mrs. J. L. Meeker of Learned, Kan., and Mrs. Noble Fox of Wellington, Kan., eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
