EARTH TO EARTH
Mrs. S. B. Loveless Died Saturday Morning
Sketch of a Worthy Woman Who Died Full of Years and of Honor
Mrs. Sarah Jane (Wolverton) Loveless, wife of Rev. Sidney B. Loveless, died at her home in this city, at 2:30 o’clock, on Saturday morning, October 8, 1898, after a painful illness of 6 months with heart disease, aged 71 years and 11 months.
Mrs. Loveless was born at Conquest, N. Y., November 8, 1826, and lived there until January 26, 1845, when she was untied by marriage with her husband who survives her.
At the age of about 10 years she was converted, and her subsequent husband was converted at nearly the same time, and both united with the Christian church at Conquest, of which Rev. Cayton was pastor.
About two years after their marriage, they left Conquest and settled at Plesantville, Pa, where they remained for about seven years. When they located there they were united with the M. E. church in that place, where he received an exhorter’s license which was given him by Rev. Major Colgrove, and a little later he received a preacher’s license. In about seven years they returned to Conquest, their former home.
Some six or seven years later they changed their church relations by uniting with the Methodist Protestant church, and a week after making this change, they attended a conference, and he was assigned to the St. Lawrence River Circuit, Jefferson county, about 100 miles from their home. Soon after going to this circuit their labors were crowned with a revival, which resulted in an addition to the church of about forty-four members. A short time after this he was ordained at an annual conference held in Stone Mills, Jefferson county. For sixteen years he remained a member of that conference, serving different charges and seeing about 1,000 persons at the altar for prayer during that time.
Throughout all of these long years of constant devotion to her Master’s service the subject of this sketch was highly esteemed by all of the preachers and their wives, and others who became acquainted wit her. Her natural talents and Christian zeal made of her an excellent helper for her husband in his ministerial labors, and with her to assist him in his revival work, he never was under the necessity of calling an evangelist to aid him.
There were born to them one son who died when he was about two years old, and two daughters, both now residing in this city, one the wife of A.W. Harwood, the other is the wife of R.H.Cuglan.
Nearly thirteen years ago, failing health compelled Mrs. Loveless to desist from those arduous, Christian labors, the performance of which has been to her a never failing source of joy and satisfaction in the past, and they came to Dakota, hoping that a change in climate would restore her health. Soon after they arrived in Dakota they united with the Foss M.E. church in Wahpeton, where she had retained her standing as an active member until her death. And they had a strong desire to spend their declining years where they could enjoy the kindly offices and cheering presence of their daughters, and it was the source of much satisfaction to both her and them to be so situated that they could, and did, do everything within their power to minister to her comfort during their mother’s prolonged sickness.
In her death the church has sustained a great loss, and to her aged husband home lost it dearest, its sweetest charm which can never be restored, while the daughters mourn the loss of a devoted Christian mother whose counsels were always for their good, and whose sympathies were ever responsive to their griefs.
The funeral occurred at 3 o’clock on Sunday, at the Methodist church. The sermon was by the pastor, Rev. A.T. Foster, who spoke from Matthew 26:22. Rev. J.L Maile, of Fargo, was present, and assisted in the services. The church was crowded full with sympathizing friend who assembled to pay their last respects to the departed.
