Mother Lum Dies Suddenly At Hospital

Funeral Services To Be Wednesday at Local Church

Mrs. E. D. Lum, known to a host of friends as “Mother” Lum, and one of the publishers of the Richland County Farmer-lobe died at St. Francis hospital early Sunday morning after undergoing surgery Saturday. She had rallied from the operation but during the night suffered a relapse from which she apparently recovered; death is believed to have been due to an embolism and occurred at 6:15 a.m.

Funeral services will be held at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon from First Congregational church, Wahpeton, with Rev. C. H. Meier officiating.

Edith Marion Counter was born at Bronson, Mich., the daughter of Herbert W. and Emma Fuller Counter. The later was a direct descendant of Dr. Samuel Fuller, who was the surgeon on the Mayflower in 1620. Mrs. Lum was a member of the Minnesota Society of Mayflower descendants and of Dacotah Chapter, DAR, of Fargo.

Edith Counter and Elmour D. Lum were married at Graaceville, Minn., April 10 1901 and went to Litchville N.D., later, where Mr. Lum was in the hardware business. He entered his forty years of newspaper publishing at Kensal, N.D, and the family lived there, at Carrington, N.D., then at Monango, going from there to Staples, Grand Forks and Valley City. In 1927 the family came to Wahpeton where they have since resided.

During his lifetime, Mr. Lum owned approximately a hundred newspapers at various times. He died Oct 8, 1944.

Mr. and Mrs. Lum were the parents of three children; Edward Donald Lum; of this city; Mrs. L. R. (Edith Marion) Bystrom, Minneapolis and Douglas Eldon, city. There are seven grandchildren: Mrs. B.L. Green (Marion Lum) of Grand Forks; Miss Merna Lum, Grand Forks; Mrs. W. D. Ward, (Edith Marion Bystrom) Cambridge, Mass., Gretchen, Susan and Melinda Lum, city, and Lydene Bystrom, Minneapolis. There is one great grandson, David Burton Green. She is also survived by one brother, H.W. Counter of Minneapolis. One sister and one brother preceded her in death.

The seven granddaughters and their fiends gave Mrs. Lum the name by which she was generally knows throughout the community, that of Mother Lum. She was hostess at slumber parties and social gatherings for the girls and friends over a twenty year period, her home being always open to them.

Family prayer services were conducted at the Lum home on Sunday morning by Reverend Meier.

Mrs. Lum was a member of the Congregational church and past president of its Ladies id; she had served as treasurer for several years past. She was a member of the Women’s Literary Club during her residence in this city and had been a member of the Order of Eastern Star over forty years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, DAR and Mayflower Descendants.

She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the family lot at Fairview cemetery. The body will lie in state at Vertin Chapel until Wednesday morning.

Pallbearers will be I.E. Lillegard, Frank Vertin, George Reeder, E. F. Riley, A.W. Hoppert and Cap E. Miller, the later of Fargo.
