Obituary

Walter Loff dies at age 78

Walter P. Loff, 78, retired Galchutt farmer and Wahpeton businessman, died Thursday, Nov. 22, at St. Francis Medical Center, Breckenridge.

Mr. Loff was instrumental in the planning and organizing of the Red River Valley sugar beet plant (now known as Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative). He was also involved in organizing the Will-Rich manufacturing plant (now Lear-Siegler), Wahpeton and in building Lillegard, Inc.

He was a partner in the Goodyear Auto Service Center, Wahpeton, which was built in 1970.

The funeral will be Monday, Nov. 26, at 2 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton. The Rev. Marvin L. Hartmann will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday at 11 at Vertin's Wahpeton Chapel and Monday prior to the service at the church. There will be no prayer service.

Walter P. Loff was born Oct. 13, 1906, in Mitchell Township, Wolverton, to Hans and Mathilda (Stack) Loff. He was raised there and attended schools in Kent and Abercrombie. He married Myrtle Larson March 8, 1930 at Galchutt. They farmed in Abercrombie Township near Galchutt.

While living in the Galchutt area, he was a member of the local school board and was a charter member of Galchutt Lutheran Church, assisting in organizing the congregation.

In 1957 they moved to Wahpeton. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was a member of the Fairview Cemetery Board, Wahpeton, for many years, in addition to his other community activities.

Surviving are his wife, Wahpeton; two sons, Wayne, Joshua Tree, Calif.; Donavon, Galchutt; one daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Lorna) Quake, Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy, Mesa, Ariz.; George, Sonora, Calif.; Maurice, Clinton, Minn.; four sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Nord, Breckenridge; Mrs. Albin (Ann) Nord, Wolverton; Mrs. Frances (Edlund) Moorhead; Mrs. Lorraine Fagerberg, Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by three infant sons, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Casket bearers will be Douglas, Bryan and Gregory Loff, Bradley and Steven Quake and James Elmquist.
