Frederick Martin Killed

Frederick Martin, 48, was killed when his county motor patrol was struck by the Great Northern’s Oriental Limited just out of Doran.

Martin had just gone through Doran with the motor patrol. The machine was seen to hesitate, as though the driver was looking to see if the crossing was clear, then it proceeded onto the crossing to be hit by the north bound train. At the angle of the crossing the train would have been almost at the back of the patrol and apparently was not see by Martin.

The train was coming at a speed of sixty miles an hour it is reported and although the airbrakes were thrown by the engineer the collision was terrific. Parts of the road scraping machine were scattered over a 50 yard radius and Martin’s body was thrown about twenty yards.

The high wind Wednesday meant that the patrol would have been operated with the windows closed and this no doubt was part of the cause of the accident the machine being so noisy that no other sound could penetrate the cab.A 12-foot plank from the crossing was driven into the diesel engine. The application of the air brakes

flattened three of the train wheels. A crew from Breckenridge made temporary repairs and an engine was sent out from the round house to bring the train to Breckenridge. The train was delayed more than four hours. The diesel engine was kept at Breckenridge and the train proceeded on to Fargo with a steam locomotive. Frederick Martin had been with the county highway department in Wilkin county for 16 years. He was known as a careful conscientious workman. Prior to going with the highway department he was employed by the city of Wahpeton, moving to Breckenridge when he obtained employment there.

In addition to his wife Mr. Martin leaves eight children: Winnifred, Janet, Bud, Doris, Shirley, Carol, Monica and Juliet and two stepdaughters, Mrs. George Mehl and Mrs. Don Haggart. He leaves three brothers, Earl and George of Breckenridge and Albert Martin, of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Jack Lankow and Mrs. Henry Lankow, of Breckenridge vicinity, Mrs. Boyd Ackert and Mrs. Edna Nelson at Fargo.
