Death Wins Race with Parents of Foxhome Boy
Death won the race with little Donald Martin’s parents Saturday night. Donald had been ill for several months and his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Martin had been concerned over his health. They were away for a brief time Saturday and when they returned, Donald, who was with his older brothers and sister was ill.
The parents decided that medical help would to be obtained at once if they were to save the child. Rather than to lose the time necessary to get the doctor to their place, they decided to rush the baby to the doctor. They bundled the little fellow up, he was only six months old, and started their race with death. They arrived at the doctor’s office, believing they had won.
The kindly family doctor put back the blanket that protected the baby from the cold and uttered only two words: “Too Late.” The next stop was a local mortuary. The race was lost. The baby was dead.
Donald Martin was born August 21, 1934 at Wahpeton. His home was in Foxhome township, Wilkin county, Minnesota with his parents. He is survived by his parents, his sisters, Winifred, Janet, Gay and Doris, and half-sisters, June and Lenore Stitz. The body lay in state in Vertin’s chapel Sunday and part of Monday. Services were conducted this (Monday) afternoon from the Methodist church in Breckenridge with Rev. Hill officiating. A short service was conducted from the home of the child’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Matheson.
