August Matt of Center Township Dies on Monday
Funeral Services For Well Known Richland Pioneer To Be Conducted Thursday Afternoon
August Matt, well known Center township farmer passed away this (Monday) morning after a brief illness. Funeral services are to be conducted on Thursday afternoon at one o’clock from the home and at two from the Immanuel church with Rev. R. J. Becker officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery.
August Matt was born in Baden, Germany, Dec. 25, 1876. He came to the United States as a boy 13 years old, and settled at Iron Mountain, Mich., with relatives. He stayed there until he was 17 years old when he came to Great Bend vicinity. He was married to Elsie Mohs at Great Bend in 1899 and they moved to a farm in Center township where they have lived ever since. Mr. Matt was well known all over the county. He was active in affairs of Center township and a member of the school board for 16 years.
August Matt was typical of the pioneer people who built up this county. He was a hardworking, religious, honest citizen devoted to his family and his farm. He never shirked community duties and did his share of the work to be done for the common good.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Ludwig and Robert, both living in Center township. Another son, Henry died in 1935. Four brothers and a sister are living in Germany.
The body lies in state at Schmitt & Olson Funeral chapel.
