Henry Matt Killed in Harvest Accident at Center Township Farm
Second son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Dies Monday Morning at Hospital: Funeral Wednesday
A team of horses without a driver trotted into the August Matt farmyard Sunday morning presaging the tragedy which resulted in the death of their son, Henry Matt, aged 34, early Monday morning.
Hurrying to the field where his son had been using a binder, Mr. Matt found him laying unconscious with a gash in his shoulder and two fingers cut off. He was bleeding badly.
He was rushed to the Wahpeton hospital by a neighbor, his fingers amputated and everything possible in medical skill done to save his life. Loss of blood and internal injuries resulted in his death early Monday morning.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Matt home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., and from Immanuel Lutheran church at 2:30 p.m. Rev R. J. Becker, pastor of the church, will officiate at both services.
Henry Matt, second son of Mr. and Mrs. August Matt was born in Wahpeton July 31, 1901 and reared on the Matt farm in Center township where he made his home during his entire lifetime.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Matt and two brothers, Ludwig, who farms in Center township; and Robert, who is at home.
The accident is supposed to have resulted when the horses ran away or at least started up quickly throwing Mr. Matt under the binder. In addition to a gash on his shoulder and a cut which took off several fingers and extended up his arm he suffered severe internal injuries which made recovery impossible.
The Matt family are old residents of Center township and their many neighbors and friends are sympathizing with them in their tragic loss.
