C. A. McKEAN IS DEAD AFTER SHORT ILLNESS PIONEER SETTLER OF COUNTY PASSED AWAY WAS SERGEANT THRU CIVIL WAR Settled in Richland County in 1881, And Lived Near Hankinson and in Wahpeton Since Then-Adjutant of Sumner Post, G. A. R. The death of Mr. Charles Arthur McKean occurred Monday afternoon, December 13th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. S. Lauder, in this city. Death occurred as the result of a short illness of only a few days duration, and the news came as a shock to the entire community. Mr. McKean was seventy-one years of age, having been born in Francestown, New Hampshire, October 18, 1844. Most of his boyhood was spent in Antirm, N. H., where his family lived for many years, his father and grandfather being among the earliest settlers in that community. Mr. McKean’s father, known and loved in Antrim as Deacon McKean, is still remembered there as one of the most genial and fine characters of that city.
Mr. McKean inherited something of this disposition, and during his long years in this community made a very large and enduring circle of friends. In 1863 his family moved near Lake City, Minnesota and in 1864 Mr. McKean enlisted in the First Minnesota Heavy Artillery, which was stationed at Cattanoga and in which he served as sergeant till the end of the war.
In 1866 he was married to Frances M. Ambler, of Clinton, Connecticut, and after a few years in Minnesota they moved to Richland county in 1881, settling on a farm near Hankinson. They removed to Wahpeton to get school advantages for their children, and it has been their home ever since.
About 1890 Mr. McKean served as Justice of the Peace and was then appointed as postmaster for four years. For twelve years he was in the office of Clerk of Court, part of the time as deputy. For many years he was Adjutant of Sumner Post, G. A. R.
Mr. McKean is survived by his wife, Frances M. McKean, and six of his eight children: Mrs. W. S. Lauder of this city, Mrs. E. L. Shaw of Caldwell, Idoho, Mrs. Ora Hazen of Larimore, N. D., Mr. Arthur E. McKean of Isabel, S. D., Mr. Charles J. McKean of Pisek, N. D., and Mrs. Ralph B. Dennis of Evanson, Ill. A brother, Mr. William G. McKean, is living in Berkeley California.
Funeral services were conducted at the home of Mrs. W. S. Lauder, and at the Congregational church by Rev. Sewrey. The Masonic Lodge, G. A. R., and W. R. C. organizations of which Mr. McKean had long been a member, attended the services in a body.
Mr. Arthur McKean, Mr. Charles McKean and Mrs. Ralph Dennis arrived in this city Tuesday to attend the funeral; also Miss Francis Lauder, granddaughter of the deceased, from Hannaford, N. D. Mrs Ora Hazen is not able to attend the funeral because of illness, and Mrs. Shaw because of the long distance from Wahpeton.
