Rites Here Saturday for Arthur McKean
Arthur Ellis McKean, a former Wahpeton pioneer, a former captain of Company I and Spanish-American war veteran, passed away Tuesday at the home of his son, Dr. Robert McKean in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 84.
Arthur McKean was bon Feb 22, 1876, in Chester Minn., and came to Wahpeton with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Charles McKean.
The family homesteaded near Hankinson on the shores of Lake Elsie and the following year moved to Wahpeton where his father became Clerk of Court and later acted as Postmaster.
Arthur was education in Wahpeton public schools and he graduated with one of the first classes to graduate from Wahpeton high school. He was an active member of the Congregational church of Wahpeton for 30 years.
During the Spanish-American war and the Philippine Insurrection, McKean served with Company I and went to the Philippines and the Company as 1st Sargeant, returning in Sept 1899. He served as captain of Company I from 1906 to 1910.
In 1900, Arthur McKean was married to Bertha Electra Sissons of Allegan, Mich. Two sons were born to this union Kenneth now of Philidelphia, Penn., and Dr Robert of Boise, Idaho. Mrs. McKean passed away in 1936.
In 1911, the Arthur McKean family moved to Isabel, S.D., where McKean was in general merchandising business from 1915 to 1939 and later in cattle and sheep raising and general farming.
While in Isabel, he was an active member of the town board for five years and the Welfare board of Dewey County; he was a member of the Mason Blue Lodge and was awarded the 50-year medal in 1951; a charter member of Eastern Star at Isabel.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m., at the Vertin chapel with Rev. Hirons officiating with the Masonic Lodge conducting a part of the service.
Interment will be in the McKean lot in Fairview Cemetery.
He was a brother of the late Mrs. Nettie McKean Lauder and uncle of Max Lauder of this city.
