R. V. McMichael Dies Here Suddenly Early Friday Morning from Heart Attack

Pioneer Resident Has Served As Sheriff of Richland County; Active in Democratic Party

Robert V. McMichael, one of Wahpeton’s leading citizens, died shortly after midnight this (Friday) morning. Death was caused by heart trouble. Mr. McMichael was apparently, in good health, when he suddenly slumped over dead. Relatives who were with him at the time summoned the family doctor. It was too late. Robert V. McMichael has been most active in the life of the community in which he has lived practically all of his life. He has served as deputy sheriff in Richland county and as sheriff. He has served as county chairman of the Democratic party and has been an official in the state organization. He has been a lifelong Democrat with a large number of friends all over North Dakota.

Robert Victor McMichael was born September 4, 1882 at S aport, Ontario, Canada and came as a child, four years old with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert McMichael of Sheldon, N.D. where they made their home until 1890, when they moved to Wahpeton. He grew up here and in young manhood engaged in the blacksmith business. He owned his own shop until 1913, when he became deputy sheriff.

He then founded the R. V. McMichael Motor Agency which he operated until twelve years ago when he was elected sheriff of Richland county. He held that office for two terms, allowed by law, and retired from active politics to found and operate the Farmers Credit Company. He built this business into a large and thriving establishment doing business over most of southeastern North Dakota.

Sarah A. Rickert and R. V. McMichael were married at Moorhead, Minn., July 5, 1906. Miss Rickert was a Wahpeton young lady whom “Bob” McMichael had known nearly all his life. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Clyde Hauskens (Lois), Dale and Janet, all of Wahpeton. He is also survived by one brother. A. E. McMichael of Wyndmere, and two sisters, Mrs. Maude Haas and Beatrice McMichael of Fargo.

R. V. Michael was a member of Wahpeton Lodge, A. F. & M. The Royal Arch Masons, The Knights Templar, the Odd Fellows, the woodmen and the A. O. U. W. He was chairman of the Bishops committee of the local Episcopal church and a member of the Wahpeton Commercial Club.
