FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. J. B. MERTZ WEDNESDAY Former Wahpeton Woman Laid Beside Husband and Two Sons at Fairview Cemetery Funeral services were held at Foss Methodist church Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Fannie Philbric Mertz, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grace Gilson, at Winnipeg, last Sunday. Services were conducted by Rev. E. A. Allin, pastor of the Congregational church, in the absence of Rev. W. L. Bennett.
Fannie E. Philbric was born in Illinois, sixty-eight years ago. She was married in Iowa to Joseph Bradner Mertz. They resided in South Dakota for some time, and thirty years ago came to Wahpeton to make their home. Mr. Mertz died about two months after the family came to Wahpeton, leaving the mother with five young children. He was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery here, and within three years the youngest son passed away, and was buried beside his father. Mrs. Mertz resided here until 1910. Meanwhile the children grew to manhood and woman hood, were married, and established their own homes. The oldest son, Ernest Mertz was the husband of Mrs. Ethel K. Mertz, county superintendent of schools of Richland county. He passed away thirteen years ago, and is at rest in Fairview. Since 1910 the mother has made her home with her daughters – Mrs. Edna Sprague, of Winnipeg, and Mrs. Winnie Kirkham, of Vancouver, B. She has been an invalid for the past seven months.
Mrs. Mertz was known as a devoted church woman and Sunday school teacher, and was an active W. C. T. U. worker. Other relatives surviving her are a sister in South Dakota, who was unable to attend the funeral, and a cousin George M. Dawson, of South Dakota. There are eleven grandchildren, of whom two, Bradner and Jean Mertz, reside with their mother in Wahpeton.
