Obituary

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton with Rev. Dale Logodinski, Rev. Peter Anderl, Deacons Jim Anderson and George Ethier. Private Meyer went missing in action on December 12, 1950 and was presumed dead in North Korea on December 31, 1953.

Joseph K. Meyer was born in Wahpeton, ND on October 19, 1932. He grew up in Wahpeton and attended school at St. John’s and Wahpeton High School.

Joe enlisted in the Army on November 10, 1949 with parental consent. He was 17 years old. He was listed as missing in action on December

12, 1950 and presumed dead on December 31, 1953. He trained with the bazooka gun and was stationed in Japan for a short period of time.

Private Meyer served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Company K 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.

In addition to the Purple Heart awarded after his death, other medals awarded posthumously were the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Joe Meyer was the son of J.K. and Clara Meyer. His father died in 1952 and his mother in 1970.

He was also preceded in death by a sister in infancy.

Joe is survived by his sisters: Emma Wolfe, St. Maries, ID, Alice Pausch, Hankinson, ND, and Rose Moore, Doran, MN. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Doug Peters, Brad Peters, Karen Smith, Patty Pritchard, Craig Pausch, Sharon Berg, Marilyn Fifield, Nancy Moore, Barb Schroeth and Joanne Forbord.

Military honors will be conducted by North Dakota Military Funeral Honors, Hafner-Miller-Ross American Legion Post No 20 and Wahpeton FVW Post No. 4324. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Wahpeton. Funeral arrangements will be from Vertin-Munson Funeral of Wahpeton.

Honorary Casket bearers will be Evelyn Trullinger, Jack Olson, Wally Olson, Pat Shorma, James Madigan, Jasper Berg, John German, Doug Peters, Nancy Moore, Barb Schroth and his former classmates.
