Paul Meyer, 90, Pioneer Resident Dies Saturday
Started Laundry Business 58 Years Ago in Wahpeton
Paul Meyer, 90, whose efforts in behalf of his church, have made him one of the best known clergyman Lutheran circles died quietly Saturday evening about _____ o’clock.
Services for the pioneer businessman will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. Henry Fry conducting the service. Vertin Funeral Service are in charge of the arrangements. Family prayer services will be held in the Vertin chapel at two.
Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery beside his wife and three children who preceded him in death.
Paul Meyer was born in March, 1861 at Proviso, Ill., the son of Rev and Mrs. Carl Meyer. In the spring of 1882, the young Paul Meyer migrated to Oberlin, Ohio, having grown to manhood in Proviso and later attending Concordia College at Springfield, Ill.
Because of ill health, he had to leave college where he studied the ministry from 1877 to _______. Paul Meyer married Barbara Baumgarten in 1886 at Herndon, Kansas and the young couple moved to Appleton, Minn., and from there to Odessa, Minnesota in 1891 where he worked as a clerk.
The Meyers came to Wahpeton in where Paul Meyer entered the steam laundry business. In the business he was highly successful retiring in 1936 to turn the business over to his son, Al who still operates it.
Although Paul Meyer took an active part in the business life of Wahpeton for 58 years he was best known for his friendliness, his love of people and his deep and abiding faith in Christianity. He served as treasurer of the North Dakota-Montana District Missouri Synod of the Lutheran church for 20 years. During his life here he did much to assist the work of Immanuel church and served on nearly all its boards including board president and treasurer, and even had read lessons from the pulpit in the absence of the minister. He served on Fairview cemetery board and for years was president of Wahpeton hospital association.
Paul Meyer serve as president of the North Dakota Laundrymen’s Association, and was recognized leader in the profession.
Mrs. Meyer preceded him in death June 9, 1940. He is survived by two sons, Rev. Paul E. Meyer of Milford, Ill., and Al Meyer of Wahpeton, and a daughter, Mrs. Laura W. Mueller of Burbank, Calif. A sister, Ms. Laura Baumhofner of Norwood, Minn., and a brother, Theo Meyer of Minot, also survive. There are six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
