Obituary

Alvin H. (Al) Meyer, 63, owner of Wahpeton Laundry and Cleaners, died Tuesday evening at St. Francis hospital where he had been hospitalized for six days.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran church with Rev. Henry Fry officiating. The Wahpeton American Legion Post will have charge of graveside military rites. Interment will be the Meyer family lot in Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Oscar Krause, Dr. H. H. Pfister, Walter Fenske, Walter Holthusen, George Holthusen and William Matheson.

Schmitt - Poulton Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends may call at their chapel Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning.

Alvin Herman Meyer, was born Jan. 6, 1895 in Wahpeton. He attended local schools including the State School of Science where he was a member of the Wildcat's football team. After completing school, he entered the laundry business with his father.

During World War I he was a musician with the 164th Infantry band, entering service July 15, 1917 at Lisbon. He was stationed at Camp Greene, N. C., Camp Mills, N. Y., and Camp Merritt, N. J., before going over-seas in December 1917. He was mustered out in 1919.

Returning to Wahpeton he continued in business with his father. In 1938 he purchased the business from his father but the latter continued to be a frequent caller at the firm until his death in 1952.

He and Mildred Maskek were united in marriage Feb. 15, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran church here.

Mr. Meyer was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran church, being president of the church council at the time the new church was erected and serving as a member of the council until his death. He also directed the church choir a number of years.

Always interested in music, he at one time was a member of the American Legion band here.

He served as post commander and was an active member of the Wahpeton American Legion post, the 40 et 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chamber of Commerce of which he served as president for a year, the Wahpeton Kiwanis club and the Alphean Male Chorus.

Mr. Meyer was also interested in sports, dating back to his football days at the Science School. He was a regular fan at local athletic contests and was the sponsor of bowling items and other events.
