Soldier, His Father To Be Buried at Double Service Here Tuesday
T. A Mollerud Dies As Son’s Body Arrives
Father and soldier son will be laid to rest following double funeral services from First Congregational church for Theodore Mollerud, who died Sunday at his home, and Marine Earl P. Mollerud, killed in action in Korea June 8th Dr. S. G. Schick will officiate at the double rites and men from the Air Corps training squadron here will form honor guard for the marine and participate in military rites at the graveside.
Theo. Mollerud had been in failing health for many years but had planned to attend his son’s rites when news was received that the body was arriving from Korea. Funeral services for father and son will be held from the church of which both were members. The double rites will be conducted a three o’clock Tuesday afternoon with all immediate members of the family attending.
Theodore Andrew Mollerud was born September 20, 1887 at Grafton. His parents died when he was a young lad. He worked with P. C. Dahl at New Effington, S. D., and came to Wahpeton when Mr. Dahl established the Ford garage here, working for him and for other car agencies until stricken with illness.
He married Alma Howg and following her death married Miss Edith Purdon of this city, July 15, 1922. He suffered a severe stroke in 1932 and has been in ill health since that time.
He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Masonic lodges and of the Congregational church.
He is survived by his wife, a brother, Hans Howg, of Santa Anna, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. L. M. Erickson, Badger, Minn., Mrs. Anne Erickson, Greenbush, Minn., and Mrs. Helga Erickson, International Falls, Minn.
Children who survive are Miss Betty at home; Mrs. C. R. Ruppert, Grafton, N.D.; Mrs. Frank Shledorn, Dickinson, N.D.; Mrs. Anthony Hanzlik, Rapid City, S. D.; Donald Mollerud, Moorhead; Emery Mollerud, Barnesville, Marvin Mollerud, Grand Forks, Mrs. LeRoy Lenz, Igloo, S. D., Mrs. Vivian Perreault, Sisseton.
Men from the Air Corps will provide a military escort at the train for Marine Mollerud and will stand honor guard until the hour of services; they will have charge of the military rites at the graveside. Sgt. Wesley P. Husan accompanied the body on its long trip home.
Interment for Pfc. Mollerud will be in Fairview cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Vertin Funeral chapel in this city.
Earl Purdon Mollerud was born in Wahpeton, August 20, 1930. He graded from Wahpeton high school in 1948. He was a member of the Congregational church. He had worked on the Great Northern railroad out of Wahpeton and at the Gillespie Shoe Store in Fergus Falls. He had been employed at the local Red Owl Store and had worked up to relief manager when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 30, last year.
He took his boot training at San Diego, graduating Jan 6. After spending ten days at home he returned to Camp Joseph Pendleton at Oceanside for further training and on April 14 sailed for Kobe, Japan and after a few days there went to Korea where he was attached in Headquarters company, 1st Sig. Btn., and received radio schooling for his work. Completing this on May 2 he was transferred to a radio team to go to the front to direct fighter planes with the 7th Marine Regiment. He liked this wok as much as anything he had done, he wrote his parents, and he hoped to continue with radio on his return.
June 8th while in support of Marine group troops in Yack-on-ni, Korea area. Northeast of Seoul he and his team officer and three other men were killed instantly when the radio jeep in which they were working struck and exploded a land mine. He was buried with full honors in the United Nations cemetery at Tanggak, Pusan.
Other relatives expected are Mrs. Maude Purdon, Mr. and Mrs. James Purdon, Mr and Mrs. Ernest Jones, all of Lisbon. Unable to attend are the Misses Clara and Florence Purdon, of Morristown, J.J., and Col. Frank Purdon, Andover, Mass., who visited here this summer.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Gilles, Kenneth Holly, Charles Flaa, Duane Kent, Robert Hess, James Kaatz, Daniel Morstz and Fred Kella.
