Obituary

George E. Moody-1911

The career of Dr. Moody is typical of the vim and energy of the young men who have helped to make history in North Dakota. He was of Irish-American decent and was born in Richland Co, Wis., July 22, 1863and was 48 years 4 months and 17 days at the time of his death. He was the son of E. L. D. and Betsy A. Moody. He attended the public schools of his neighborhood and Colon Academy St. Joseph, Mich.

When he was 21 years old, he was Chief of Police of Richland Center, Wis., serving one year and resigned. In 1887 he moved to Wahpeton and has since made his home here.. He was married April 14, 1888, to Miss Minnie M. Bureau of Elizabeth, Minn., the youngest daughter of Edward Bureau, the first settler in Otter Tail county, Minn. To this union were born three children Hazel, Grover and Claud George Henry, the youngest being 15 years of age.

Dr. Moody was elected sheriff of Richland county in 1900 on the Democratic ticket, served two years and was re-elected by a majority of 1044 in a county that was over-whelmingly Republican. He was elected sheriff a third time in 1910, in a three cornered fight, when he ran independent, each of the political parties having candidate of their own. Nothing but his untimely death could have prevented another re-election for him.

His election to the office of sheriff in this county singularly coincides with the official career of his father who came to America a friendless youth from Ireland, made his way west, and was several times elected Sherif of Richland county, Wis., and at about the same age his son duplicated that achievement in a county of the same name in a newly organized state.

A short time after his second term as sheriff Dr. Moody recognized the face of a man in Breckenridge, Minn., from a photograph that had been sent him two years before. The man was in a saloon and heavily armed. He was

the notorious Wm. Faley alias Darcy an escaped forger from the Chester, Ill. Penitentiary. Dr. Moody made the arrest took his prisoner back to Chester and received the large reward offered. Dr. Moody was widely known as an expert veterinarian and from his long experience as a livestock dealer, was one of the best judges of horses in the country. His control over horses was well demonstrated when he was only 13 years old. He at the time trained a young colt to perform so well that he was offered a handsome salary by a circus owner, but did not accept it.

During the administration of Governor Shortridge he was appointed veterinarian of the fourth district.
