Frank Matejka, 80, Breck, Dies; Rites To Be Saturday

Frank Abert Matejka, 80 a pioneer resident of reckenridge, died Wednesday at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge.

Rev Frederick Kampsen will officiate at funeral mass slated for 10 Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wahpeton.

Mr. Matejka was born Sept. 15, 1886 in Ripes, Czechoslovakia, where he attended school. At the age of 17 he came to the United States and arrived in Breckenridge Dec 10, 1903. He became a citizen of the United States in 1912 and started employment as a car repairman for the Great Northern Railroad.

In 1917 he enlisted in Company I, 164th Infantry at Wahpeton and served in France and Germany during World War I. Mr. Matejka was married to Mary Moravec; June 21, 1921 in Chicago. The couple made their home at Breckenridge since. He retired from the Great Northern in 1951. Mrs. Matejka died in 1964.

A member of the Breckenridge VFW Post and the Alfred Lockman Post, he was elected president of Company I, 164th Infantry group at its last reunion. He also belonged to the ZCBJ Lodge.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday at Joseph Vertin and Sons Funeral Home, Breckenridge, with a Bible Vigil at 8:15 p.m.

Surviving are one son, Frank Jr., Breckenridge; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Helen) Gunness, Breckenridge; Mrs. Frank (Elizabeth) Bina, St. Paul, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. One sister, Kattie Hurdy, in Czechoslovakia also survives.
