C. F. Mittag, 68, Wahpeton, Dies; Rites Held Today

C. F. Mittag, 68, operator of a Wahpeton sand and gravel business, died Tuesday at a local hospital.

Funeral services were held today (Thursday) from Immanuel Lutheran church Rev. Richard Teuscher officiating. Interment was at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The Wahpeton American Legion Post conducted graveside rites.

Carl Frederich Mittag was born Jan. 27, 1895 in Brandenberg Township near Great Bend, the son of Carl F. and Katherine Mittag. He attended local schools.

He served in the army during World War I. Following discharge he returned to Great Bend.

He married Matilda Budock Feb. 11, 1920. They farmed in Brandenberg township and later in Center township for 26 years.

They moved to Wahpeton where Mr. Mittag, with his son, Earl, operated a sand and gravel business and the city sanitation service for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Mrs. Oline (Joyce) Martinson, Breckenridge, Mrs. Roy Marohl, Roy Mittag, Ottertail, Minn., Mrs Frank (Carol) Vitiello, San Antonio, Tex., and Earl Mittage,Wahpeton and 16 grandchildren.

A brother, Rev. George Mittag, Streeter, N.D., and three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Alvinia) Osborn; Mrs. Robert (Hattie) Mielke and Mrs. George (Ella) Schlener, all of Wahoeton, also survive. He is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers.

Mrs. William Enochson was organist and the church choir provided vocal music. Active pallbearers were Gordon Pappa, Jack Schlener, Earl Dosch, Herb Gast, Harold Diederich and Milton Sletten. Honoary pallbearers were Wilfred Emmel, Lawrence Nater, Lynn Comstock, Oscar Dahlgren, Harold Nunns and Herman Becker.

Vertin’s-Wahpeton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The Garden of the Christus is located in the Memorial Gardens, which comprises the northern half of the cemetery.
