Obituary
Herman Mittag Rites Saturday In Wahpeton
Rites will be conducted Saturday in the First Evangelical United Brethern church in Wahpeton for Herman C. Mittag, 74, who died March 12 at Ashland, Ore. He had been in ailing health for some time.
Rev. Walter Elmer will officiate at the service with Jos. Vertin and Sons Funeral Home of Breckenridge in charge. Pallbearers will be Nolan and Howard Osborn, Roy and Earl Mittag and Jack and Kenneth Schlner.
Herman Mittag was born Dec. 19, 1885, at Hankinson, the son of Carl and Catherine Mittag.
He grew to manhood on his parent’s farm near Hankinson, attending schools in the community. For several years he was a grain buyer at Goodrich, N.D., prior to 1913 when he started farming near Great Bend.
He retired in 1941 and went to Azusa, Calif. When his health began to fail, he came back to this area but returned to the west coast.
Mr. Mittag married Martha Manske on Feb. 4, 1909, at Aconta, Wis. At one time, Mr. Mittag was a state representative from this county.
Surviving are four sons, David and Ivan of Azusa, California, James of Paradise, Calif., and Vilas of Ashland, Ore.; three sisters, Mrs. H. H. (Alvina) Osborn, Mrs. Hattie Mielke and Mrs. George (Ellan) Schlener, all of Wahpeton: two brothers, C. F. Mittag of Wahpeton and Rev. G. H. Mittag of Eureka, S. D.; nine grandchildren and a great grandchild. His parents, a brother and a great grandson preceded him in death.
