Obituary
Pioneer Woman To be Buried Thursday from Baptist Church At Fairmount
At 12:35 p.m. Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Edward M. Nelson passed away at her home in Summit township, her death coming to her in the very home in which she had lived a half century of her long and useful life.
The funeral services were set this (Thursday) morning for Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church at Fairmount. The officiating minister has not yet been announced.
Mary Elizabeth Pease, daughter of George and Sarah Pease, was born April 28, 1859, at Livermore Falls, Maine, and at the time of her death was 73 years old. Her early life was spent in Livermore and there she received her education. Her parents moved west and came to Richland county, coming to the home where W. W. Pease, a brother lives at the present time
For several years she taught school in this county and on June 18, 1882, she was married to Edward M. Nelson and the newly married couple went to live on the farm which was their home until the time of their deaths.
To Mr. and Mrs. Nelson came all the hardships and the joys of the pioneer life and they willingly underwent all of the hardships and were never heard to complain of them. Mr. Nelson went to his reward on January 11, 1929, and Mrs. Nelson continued to make her home at the farm which has been operated by a son, Rudolph, who has always remained with his parents.
Two years ago she became ill and she was confined to her bed most of the time during the last two months before her death. Always of a cheerful disposition, Mrs. Nelson never gave up the hope that she would again become well. During her last illness she was cared for by a daughter, Mrs. Donald Wilbur, of Portland, Ore., who left about a month ago after spending five months at home, another daughter Mrs. C. S. Hasty of Tyler and a daughter-in-law Mrs. Edward Nelson of Fairmount. Mrs. Wilbur left when she was called home because of illness in her own family. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Nelson, two having preceded their parents in death. Amy Florence, who passed away in 1923 and Robert who died in 1920. The surviving children are six sons, Ralph of Watauga, S.D., Rudolph at home, Edward of Fairmount, Roland of Mohall, Wallace of Fargo and Albert of Rock Springs, Wyo., and two daughters. Mrs. Wilbur and Mrs. Hasty. Two brothers, W. W. Pease of Missoula, Mont., a sister Mrs. William Killian of Lowell, Wash., and eight grandchildren also survive.
Mrs. Nelson was a life-long member of the Baptist church and has been a faithful member of the Fairmount congregation. Her remains will be buried in Fairview cemetery beside those of her husband.
