Obituary
E. M. Nelson, Prominent In Policies For 25 Years, Was Farmer Near Tyler.
Death early Friday afternoon closed one of the most active political careers in Richland County, when E. M. Nelson, of Tyler, passed quietly away at the Wahpeton hospital. The former state senator and prominent farmer succumbed to an operation performed earlier in the week. Funeral services are to be held Tuesday afternoon from the Foss Methodist church at Wahpeton. Burial is to be made in Fairview cemetery.
Edward M. Nelson was born near Fredrickshaven, Denmark, July 19, 1852. He came to America as a lad of nineteen years and was employed in Iowa and Southern Minnesota for a number of years. In 1878, he settled on the homestead near Tyler with was his home at the time of his death last Friday. In June 1882, he was married to Mary E. Pease, of Wahpeton. To this union was born ten children, eight of whom together with Mrs. Nelson survive the senator. The children are Rudolph, at home, Rolland, Lansford; Edward, near home; Mrs. Clayton Hasty, near Tyler; Sarah, living out west; Wallace, at Fargo; Albert, living in Wyoming; and Mrs. Mary Nelson, the widow.
In politics, Mr. Nelson has been very active, having been a delegate to several state and county conventions since 1882 and was recognized as a county political lender. He was active in the temperance move and an ardent advocate of prohibition. He has been township supervisor, justice of the peace, assessor, and school director. For two years he also served as state representative from this district.
