John M. Ness Rites Are Held Here Monday
Science School Instructor Dies Friday Afternoon
Funeral services for John M. Ness, native of Richland county and long time instructor at the State School of Science, who died Friday at St. Francis hospital, were held Monday afternoon from Wahpeton Methodist church. He had been confined to his home for the past six months after suffering a heart attack.
Thursday he was taken to the hospital after a relapse.
John M. Ness was born on a farm near Dwight, March 29, 1885, one of a family of 12 children born to Mr. an Mrs. Chris Ness. He spent his boyhood on the farm and came to Wahpeton to attend the Science School in 1908. He graduated in 1911 and then became winter term instructor in forge shop and blacksmithing until 1916. From 1916 to 1920 he was in the garage business in partnership, the firm being Uesa and Schafer. He returned to the Science School in 1920 and taught winter terms until 1925 when he became director of the machine shop, a position he had held since that time.
All of his family was associated with the school in the entire Ness family of twelve boys and girls, attending classes there and both Mr. and Mrs. Ness being alumni as are their son and daughter.
Mr. Ness was prominent in local Masonic work. He was a Past Master of Wahpeton Masonic lodge as well as District Deputy Grand Master, Past High Priest of the Royal Arch Masons and was trustee of Wahpeton lodge.
He is survived by Mrs. Ness, two children, Margaret of Minneapolis and Donald of Boise Idaho and one granddaughter. He also leaves seven sisters, Mrs. Marie McKay, Mrs. Hilda Thompson, Mrs. Constance Koontz, Mrs. Louise Sanders, Mrs. Vera Haas, Mrs. Edith Oliver and Mrs. Regna Schmitt and four brothers, Harold, Sigurd, Conrad and Rudolph.
Pallbearers at the service were William Johnson, Art Kelly, Art Thompson, John Lingo, Harvey Bisek, and Earl Smith. Interment was at Fairview cemetery.
