Obituary

Mrs. Simonette Ness was born in Alstahaug, Norway, February 15, 1858. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Heitman. She was baptized and confirmed in Norway. Her father had charge of the religious instruction of the youth in her home church and Mrs. Ness grew up in the most favorable surroundings.

Having grown into womanhood she left the parental home in Norway in 1881 and came to America, arriving in Dwight, N.D. and for a short time lived with a sister, Mrs. Matt Hanson. In 1883 she was united in marriage to Mr. Chris Ness at Hickson, N.D., the pioneer minister, Rev. R. J. Wisnaes officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Ness made their home in Dwight, where they lived until 1920, when they moved to Wahpeton. It was in 1921 that Mr. Christ Ness passed away and was laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery, Wahpeton. Mrs. Ness continued to live in Wahpeton for four years and then went to Tacoma, Washington where she stayed for three years. In the spring of 1928 she returned to North Dakota to make her home with her son, Harold at the home farm near Dwight.

This last summer Mrs. Ness was not enjoying the best of health. She made a trip to Minneapolis, where she submitted to an operation. This gave her some relief and she was able to e up and about her daily tasks. On Saturday, the 18th, she was in Wahpeton, visited there with her son, John Ness, returned to her farm home and retired that night as usual. When her sons Rudolph and Harold notice that she was somewhat late in arising last Sunday morning, they called at her room to find that she had passed away. The cause of her death was apparently apoplexy.

Mrs. Ness leaves to mourn her departure twelve children, one sister and two brothers, a number of other relatives and a host of friends. The children are Mrs. Marie McKay, Shelton, Wash., Mrs. Hilda Thompson, Nebish, Minn., John Ness, Wahpeton; Mrs. Constance Wells, Minneapolis, Mrs. Louise Sanders, Bremerton, Wash., Mrs. Vera Haas, Turtle Lake, N.D., Mrs. Edith Work, San Benito, Texas Conrad Ness, Cordova, Alaska, Rudolph Ness, Tacoma, Wash. Her sister lives in Norway and her two brothers are Hans Heitman of Minot and John Heitman of Los Angeles, Calif.

Funeral services were conducted at the Bethel Lutheran church on Wednesday afternoon, Oct 22, at 2:30 o’clock with Rev. J. C. Wisnaes in charge. Mrs. J. Meyer Johnson rendered an appropriate solo and also sang in duet with Mrs. A. Halvorson with Mrs. O.R. Grover, accompanist. Interment was made at Fairview Cemetery.
