Victims of canoeing mishap

Services for Dan Ness, Donald Loberg conducted

Funerals for two classmates, Daniel Ness and Donald Loberg, both 19, of Wahpeton were Monday. The two died Friday morning when the canoe they were in capsized in rough water on Otter Tail Lake.

Carlton Mortensen, Otter Tail County Sheriff, told the Daily News Monday morning that he could not give an official cause of death but believed the youths died of exposure and not drowning. The two had lifejackets on and water temperatures were extremely cold he said. He mentioned that a large amount of ice was still on the south shore of the lake.

Mortensen said Daniel and Donald were beginning a weekend canoe-camping trip with two other Wahpeton companions. Craig Caspers, 19 and Mike Schend, 22, who were in a seperate canoe.

The sheriff said the two canoes left the lake near Madsen's Resort about 8:30 a.m. and became seperated later in rough water in the middle of the lake. Craig and Mike made their way back to shore in their canoe and found the unmanned canoe floating.

The sheriff's Air Patrol assisted in the search.

Heine Richels of Wahpeton and Knud and Robert Madsen of Richville recovered one body in a motorboat and were guided to the other after it was sighted from the air.

Requiem mass for Donald was at 9:30 a.m. in St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. George Mehok officiating. Interment was at Horace Cemetery.
