Obituary

Former SSS Instructor died at 70

Services for John C. Neperud, 70, longtime instructor at the State School of Science and well-known in sports circles here, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with Rev. Marvin L. Hartmann officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Neperud died this morning (Friday) at St. Francis Hospital.

He was born March 21, 1907 at Pigeon Falls, Wis., to Gilbert and Olive (Thorson) Neperud. He was raised there and attended local schools.

He married Olga Garson June 14, 1928 at Winona, Minn. They lived at Pigeon Falls where he farmed. They moved to Fargo where he attended Hanson's Auto School and later taught there nine years. During World War II he worked for the government and taught diesel mechanics at an army school in Omaha. He moved to Wahpeton in 1947 and taught auto mechanics at the State School of Science for 27 years, retiring in 1974.

He was a timekeeper at Golden Gloves tournaments for many years and was the recipient of the Bell Ringer Award. He was active in local sporting circles and was well-known in the Twin Towns for many years as a softball umpire. He was a director of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Association at Rollag.

He wife died Nov. 1, 1975. He married Myrtle Huseth June 1, 1977 at Bismarck and continued to live in Wahpeton.

Survivors are his wife; a son, Jerome of Surrey, N.D.; three grandchildren; a brother, Roy of Englehart, Fla.; and three sisters, Mrs. Inez Negard of New Richmond, Wis., Mrs. Ella Myers of Bangor, Wis., and Mrs. Ollie Sveum of Osseo, Wis.

Visitation will be Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday until 9:30 a.m. at Vertin's Wahpeton Funeral Home chapel. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church. There will be no prayer service.
